Sweethearts

Some relationships are marked from the beginning by formality and decorum, with the expectations at each step in the process clearly delineated. So it is with many jobs. You must dance your way through a prim, Victorian protocol of interviews and writing samples to court your love interest -- and should you the two of you find each other a suitable match, you must be quite prepared to immediately offer your hand in marriage, or at least two suitable forms of identification for the I-9.

But then there are those relationships where it's never really formally established that you're dating until one day you suddenly realize that there you are. "My girlfriend?" you say in a conversation with a friend. "What are you talking about? Oh...yeah, huh, I guess we basically are, aren't we?" Such is the case with my current tutoring job, which has now developed into something approaching full-time employment (although with no benefits, of course). In the past three weeks, a job has slowly crystallized around me.

Is it serious? Are we serious? Well, I guess I'll need to stop hitting the clubs (craigslist, Monster, and CareerBuilder) and stop flirting with bakeries. You have to know how to treat your employer right, know what I'm saying? And I mean, she's not perfect or anything but who is, and we get along pretty well, so I dunno man whatever. It's cool, things'll work out.

  1. Did you ask her out straightaway, or did you show respect for tradition by sending your resume through the temp agency?
